Grist is a village located about 2 miles west of Chadbourn, (NC). In the early 1890’s it was a little outstanding village. At that time, it could boast of having a post office, school, stores, and large saw mills. Many of the older citizens living in the Chadbourn vicinity attended school at Grist. The school stood near the home site of Mrs. Daisy Bellamy and the Thomas’ (family). In our interviews, we were told the following things about Grist: 1. Grist had a public school before Westside High was built. 2. The following people are known to have served as Principals and Teachers’ Mr. John Exum, Mrs. Lubell Smith, Mr. Elry Smith, Miss Katie George and Mrs. Pinky George. The school was a one to two teacher school. Today, Grist is mostly considered to be a part of Chadbourn. It has a beautiful church, many modern homes, good roads and an energetic citizenry. Its population is about 150-more or less. Some of the early settlers were Smiths, Strutters, Faulkes, Flowers, Walls, Brinkleys, Lawrence’s, and Powells. |
